DRAFT MINUTES OF MEETING ON TUESDAY 12TH FEBRUARY 2002 AT STOCKBRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL, AT 7.00PM.

Present: John Burton (Chair), Graham Bodenham, and Moira McGovern

Apologies: Maggie Darling, Joan Cook, Helen Cox, Alan Thomas, Anna Baynon, and Wilfrid Treasure

In Attendance: Jacqui Horsburgh (Head Teacher), Emila Knight (Clerk), Joanna Francheschi (PTA)

1.0 WELCOME and apologies: John Burton (Chair) welcomed everyone present at meeting.

1.1 Minutes of the meeting on the 20th November 2001 were approved.

2.0 MATTERS ARISING

2.1 Board membership: John Burton discussed with the board, a letter received from Edinburgh Education Support Services. This was a notification to the board that no nominations had been received for parent membership of the school board. Consequently it will be necessary for the board to co-opt two parent members on to the board within three months of the vacancy occurring (30/11/01) otherwise the board will be disestablished.

3.0 Co-option of two new parent members: John Burton informed the board members that three parents had expressed their interest in joining the board. Both Alan Thomas & Anna Baynon have now been co-opted onto the board.

3.1 Staff member to Board: It was confirmed that Helen Cox would stand down. A nomination and covering letter for a new member of staff is required. School board will have to get formal confirmation of Helen Cox's resignation.

4.0 Support for a School Dress Code: John Burton discussed a letter received by the Edinburgh Support Services regarding support for a school dress code.
This raised several ideas with board members. Some ideas included different coloured sweatshirts for P6 & P7's. Children could also be included in the design of their school clothing. Mrs Horsburgh will seek the views of the staff, and pupils via the Pupil Panel.

5.0 REPORTS

5.1 125th anniversary celebrations: There were good reports from all the celebrations held at Stockbridge Primary School. Former pupils had been invited to the school play. The Victorian day was a great fun day, when all the children dressed up in appropriate old-fashioned clothes. A photograph was also published in the Evening News.

5.2 HMI follow-up inspection: Jacqui Horsburgh confirmed that HMI had returned to the school. They visited the school and monitored notes and forward planning notes. HMI was very positive and pleased with Stockbridge Primary School. The school has received a clean bill of health. The Authority and the school will both get a draft report. This will also be published for parents reference

5.3 PTA: Following the last PTA meeting on 23rd January 2002, Joanna Francheschi discussed the 125th Celebrations.
All After School Activities are progressing very well. Scottish Country Dancing still displaying very good attendance. Unfortunately the school Ceilidh has had to be postponed until an appropriate venue has been found

6.0 ANY OTHER BUSINESS

6.1 Scottish Cyclists Union - briefing paper 'Children and Cycling':
Recommendations
On-road cycle training to be made available to all Scottish 10-12 year olds, irrespective of school or background. This requires funding, but given the long-term potential impact on health, social inclusion, road safety and transport, the amount required would represent good value for money.
Cycling to be accorded a similar status as swimming in schools, especially when safety and health issues are concerned.
Cycle Activities delivered by qualified personnel to be more readily available in school time, through after school clubs and at leisure centers.

The Board were generally supportive of the recommendations, but intended to get clarification of the third recommendation.

6.2 Transfer Funds: The Board will transfer its remaining budget to the school.

6.3 Bedtime reading week: The Board discussed possible activities for bedtime reading week, including setting homework for parents instead of for the pupils, to encourage parents to read to their children.

7.0 CORRESPONDENCE

7.1 SPTC: Six Questionnaires were handed out to parents. Completion date: 28th February 2002.

7.2 SSBA: The Board received a membership renewal form. The decision was still not to renew membership of the Scottish School Boards Association.

The meeting was closed at 9.00pm

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 26th March 2002
