INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL

This year the Board has been involved with a range of school activities and issues, including:

· Graham Bodenham and Moira McGovern continued to work with the sub committee which helped produce such an excellent range of celebrations surrounding the school's 125th Anniversary / Rowan Anderson celebrations.

· Council funding was obtained to provide cycle racks in the playground.

· The Board discussed possible activities for Bedtime Reading week, in particular the setting of homework for parents instead of for the pupils. This was a very popular with the children of the school, if not necessarily with the parents. Hopefully it did highlight the importance of bedtime reading and encourage parents to read to their children.

· We were asked to comment on draft policy of special educational needs prepared by the City of Edinburgh Council. A joint reply was sent from representatives of the Board, Staff and the PTA Committee

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

One of the main issues the Board has discussed this year relates to the ways in which we as parents communicate and interact with the school

A number of ideas have been brought to the Board which have been implemented in the School, not necessarily under the auspices of the Board directly, but as a result of the remit that the Board has to promote communication between the School and the wider parent body:

· The Bridge newsletter has been a school/parent initiative in an attempt to rationalise the written information which comes from the school, the PTA and the Board, and the Board will look at ways of finding the funding to ensure that this excellent format continues.

· As a result of feedback from parents, the informal coffee mornings have been an initiative to give parents an opportunity to get together away from the formal Board and PTA meetings. If parents at a coffee morning wish to feed back issues to the Board or PTA, they can then either contact us directly, through the PTA/Board mailbox or via pupil post.

· PARENT'S FORUM - Next year, along with the PTA, we are trying an initiative to rationalise the number of meetings held by both the PTA and Board. There is often duplication of issues discussed at our meetings, so we are going to try to have more joint meetings, and only one parent/school meeting per month, either Board, PTA or joint meeting. A new venture will be to have what we are hoping to be more open forums, where we as parents can ask to have a discussion on specific issues, so if you have suggestions on what you would like to discuss, or the format for discussion, please be in touch.

· The Board Website has been an initiative with the intention of complementing the existing School website. Hopefully parents will find this a useful way of accessing information about the school.
