Stockbridge School Board
& PTA - Noticeboard

| A brief history lesson | ![]() |
| Stockbridge School was designed in 1877 by eminent Edinburgh architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921). It is the last remaining example of his schools. |
|
Rowand Anderson also designed schools at Fountainbridge and Causewayside but these no longer exist. Back in 1877, when our School was built it was considered quite a radical design and was visited by other architects who wanted to learn from Anderson’s ideas. Stockbridge Primary was built for 600 children on behalf of Edinburgh School Board, whose own mark of the carved stone roundel depicting Education with her pupils can be seen on the front of the building. With its Gothic style it is thought to be the fines of all the first Board Schools and externally remains almost entirely unchanged 125 years on. |
|
Rowand Anderson's other Edinburgh buildings include the Scottish National
Portrait Gallery, the University of Edinburgh medical School and the
McEwan Hall as well as many churches around the city.
As
well as being Scotland's leading architect at the end of the 19th century, Rowand Anderson went on to found
the RIAS – Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. He even gave his own
house to be the head office of the RIAS, where it is still based at 5 Rutland
Square, Edinburgh.

memories
My name is Robert Watson I attended Stockbridge Primary from 1960 - 1967,in 1967 the football team won the inspector's cup the team as far as I can remember was Tommy Jones G, Robert Watson RB, Cliff Scupham LB, Alfie Dixon, Chico Stewart, Stewart Mc derrmot, James Miekle, Brian Imrie, Midfield. My memory does not stretch to rest of the team. My sister Jaqueline also attended from 1970-1977. Send a message to Robert Watson I attended Hamilton Place (Stockbridge) School c1941/44 when we moved into
the area.I mostly remember the kindliest teacher - Mr Younger who was a really caring man - dealing with quite a mixture of children and had their
interests at heart - He convinced me to sit for the qualifying exam even though I had missed quite a bit of school when my sister and I both ended up with dermatitis of some sort. Not a great deal to remember but the
feeling that someone cared was very positive. There were children at the school from an institution nearby and I always felt so sorry for them. One
boy I remember was really naughty and Mr Younger had to chase him around the room, one girl who was telling everyone her
grandfather had a yacht was
getting a bit 'uppity' and the teacher seemed to manage to play it all down. Oddly enough I can't recall his face but remember that he wore boots
and not shoes! Strange wee things to remember. I have since become a penpal
with Elspeth Walker, whose web page has the school and other photographs. Although I never knew her at school we share lots of memories. I know that
'plane travel has shrunk the world but then the internet is doing that in a
different way and I hope that the children using the internet will know more
easily and quickly how other children live and perhaps realise how fortunate they are to have the benefit of an education. I've become a real
Granny because my grandchildren say I 'bug' them about schoolwork and education although I'm still considered to be a 'cool' granny! or so they tell me. I'll have to look in at the school one day and see the collection
of memorabilia - I now live in Australia and I am doing genealogy , with photographs, little anecdotes of my life so far and sharing memories. I
hope the school buildings are never razed - so many beautiful old buildings
are disappearing. Good luck and best wishes to all the teachers and pupils.
Elizabeth Fraser nee Simpson. I left Stockbridge school in 1939 right after the war broke out when I
was evacuated to Inverness. My surname then was Kennedy I am afraid I don't remember much about the school other than going into the little
shop beside the school to pick up slate pencils for my slate which is what we used then. I remember a few of the pupils names in the school
picture on my site but not too many and surprise myself I remember any at all. You may like to visit Elspeth Wallace's site for a photo gallery which includes the School, Stockbridge, Edinburgh and the class of 1939. Calling former pupils We would be very happy to hear from any former pupils and staff of Stockbridge School. If you are unable to visit, why not jot down your favourite (or worst) memories of Stockbridge School, what were your teachers like, what was a typical day like, etc. We would also be very interested to know where you are now and what you have been doing. We may try to set up an online notice board so that former pupils can leave messages for former classmates.
