Stockbridge School Board
& PTA - Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes To School group is part of the School Board, campaigning for any measures which will improve road safety within our catchment
area. This involves regular lobbying of the Council's planning department and Local Development Committee for better road crossing points. Progress often seems slow because it takes time to get planning approval for changes to the linearity of kerblines in the New Town due to it's status as a World Heritage Site.
Recently completed projects which we have supported include:
· Great King Street traffic lights - addition of pedestrian phase + advance stop for cycles.
· Raeburn Place pelican crossing improvements.
Work in progress includes:
· Canonmills junction - traffic lights (with pedestrian phase) replacing roundabout.
· Eyre Place, Henderson Row - improvements to street lighting (especially timely as the days get shorter)
In the spring 2005, we expect to see some very important developments which we have been championing:
· The installation of a temporary 20mph zone outside the school. This will be indicated by signs with lights which will flash during entry and exit time of the school.
· Closure of Raeburn Place/St Bernards Row junction. This will remove a dangerous crossing and reduce traffic on Glenogle Road.
· Pedestrian phase improvements Leslie Place/Deanhaugh Street.
Other projects we have managed to get included in the plan are the narrowing of Saxe Coburg Street and Clarence Street where they meet Henderson Row. However, these will not happen until 2005/6 due to budget limits.
With even more traffic on our roads, it is imperative that we continue campaigning for more safe road crossings
and traffic calming in the vicinity of the school and promoting
alternatives to traveling by car. Please let us know about any dangerous road crossings in the catchment area which you think could be improved.

The City of Edinburgh Council is implementing plans for 20mph zones outside all primary schools. Check here for the full details of the Council's Central Edinburgh Traffic Proposals. As this Automobile Association graph shows, car usage continued to increase by around 12% in the six years from 1992 to 1998 in spite of even steeper price rises. It is also a sad fact that Edinburgh has one of the highest levels of car ownership per head of population in Europe. Approximately 10 people per day die in UK in Road Traffic Accidents. Luckily, there were no deaths on Edinburgh's roads last year. Off-peak traffic flow outside our school is one vehicle every 5 seconds! More than half our pupils walk to school. |
